Important Update

The first session of JEE Main 2021 entrance exam was scheduled to be held in April, while the second session was scheduled for May.

Ending all speculations, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank on Tuesday (July 6) announced that the entrance exams of JEE Main 2021 were earlier canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic will now be held. The Minister announced that the first session of JEE Main 2021 will be held from July 20 to 25 and the second session will be held from July 27 to August 2.

It is to be noted that the first session of JEE Main 2021 entrance exam was scheduled to be held in April, while the second session was scheduled for May. According to the Education Minister, the admit card and result declaration dates of JEE Main 2021 entrance exam will be announced later. 

Shortly after Pokhriyal’s announcement, the National Testing Agency (NTA) reopened the application window for the JEE Main 2021 April/July session at its official websites – nta.ac.in or jeemain.nta.nic.in. The NTA said that students who are interested in changing their exam centers or those who want to register for JEE Main 2021 entrance exam should log to the official website from July 6 to 8. The NTA announced that the last date to submit the online application fee is July 8. Candidates who are interested in applying for the May/August session of JEE Main 2021 entrance exam can submit application forms between July 9 to 12.

The admission brochure of the IIT entrance – Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) was released on the 25^th of June. This year due to the COVID-19 situation the exam dates are not yet announced. Previously, JEE Advanced was scheduled to be held on July 3 but was postponed, however, this is not the only change this year.

JEE Advanced 2020 candidates who were absent for both the exams (Paper 1 & 2) will also be allowed to appear along with the candidates from JEE Mains 2021 for JEE Advanced 2021. These students had passed JEE Main 2020 and were eligible for JEE Advanced 2021, they do not have to clear JEE Mains again this year.

This year, the number of seats reserved for women will be decided individually by each IIT as opposed to last year when the female quota was at 20 percent. Seats offered under the female quota are created in addition to the existing seats.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Advanced 2021 –

Condition 1 – Performance in JEE Main 2021

Candidates should have compulsorily passed JEE Main 2021 (Paper 1). It is also necessary for them to be among the top 2,50,000 candidates. The categories will be divided as the following:

·         GEN-EWS – 10%

·         OBC-NCL – 27%

·         SC – 15%

·         ST – 7.5%

·         OPEN – 40.5%

·         PwD – 5% horizontal reservation in all of the above.

Condition 2 – Age Limit-

For JEE Advanced 2021, the candidates should have been born on or after October 1, 1996. However, SC, ST, and PwD candidates will get a relaxation of 5 years (born on or after October 1, 1991).

Condition 3 – Number of Attempts-

Candidates can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Condition 4 – Appearance in 12th (or equivalent) Examination-

All candidates should have qualified for the 10+2th examination in 2020 or 2021 for the first time. However, if the result is declared for the academic year 2018-19 after June 2019, then the candidates of that board who appeared for their 12th standard qualifying exam in 2019 will also be termed eligible for JEE Advanced 2021 if they also meet the other eligibility criteria.

Condition 5 – Marks Required in 12th Standard Qualifying Exam–

For admissions into IITs, the candidates should have passed the Class 12th or equivalent examination. Candidates within the top 20 category percentile of the qualifying examination will also be eligible.

Note– The minimum percentage criterion has been waived off due to COVID-19. As per the criterion, candidates should have secured a minimum of 75% aggregate marks in Class 12th or equivalent examination. For the SC/ST/PwD category, the aggregate marks are a minimum of 65%.
